Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas are set to criss-cross North America this summer on a nationwide tour eventually taking them to over 50 cities. It has been several years since Alison Krauss along with Union Station band members Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin and lead vocals), Barry Bales (bass and harmony vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar and harmony vocals), and Jerry Douglas (Dobro and harmony vocals) toured together. Their last go around saw raves from critics who witnessed “Krauss and Union Station induce awe with their musical virtuosity…pangs of heartache with their ballads of disillusionment and, most significantly, the giddiness that results from hearing a familiar tune played well.” (Chicago Sun Times) It is with great pleasure that they announce their live return with a nationwide tour, with a stop at The Santa Barbara Bowl in Santa Barbara on Friday, June 24.

For the first time, Summer Solstice Celebration expands the Festival in Alameda Park to include three days – June 24th, 25th, 26th. This will be an afternoon in the park filled with art and jazz, and fun for the whole family.

The 37th Annual Summer Solstice Festival officially opens on Friday, June 24, at 4:00 PM in Alameda Park, with an afternoon and evening of non-stop theatrical and musical entertainment until 9:00 PM. Randy Tico, one of Santa Barbara’s premier musicians puts together an evening of entertainment, which also incorporates some of the parade ensembles.

The Saturday Festival begins at noon and the entertainment continues until 8 PM. The Solstice Children’s Festival is open Saturday and Sunday, June 25th and 26th from noon until 6:00 PM with a variety of family and children’s activities, free art projects, booths, musical entertainment.

The Solstice Parade will be on Saturday, June 25th, beginning at noon at State and Cota Streets in downtown Santa Barbara, turning at Micheltorena Street and at the Festival in Alameda Park

For Sunday, there will be live entertainment From 1:30 to 6:00 pm on the main stage featuring soft jazz music as well as entertainment on the children’s stage from 1:30 to 6:00 pm. All of the arts and crafts booths, food booths, and beer and wine garden will be open for all three days of the Festival.

The focal point on Sunday will be a community mural under the direction of mural artist Carlos Cuellar. People of all ages can join in to create this mural which will be approximately 60 feet long.

Summer Solstice Parade – Saturday, June 25

The theme for 2011 is “Jungle”. The Summer Solstice Parade features more than 1,000 parade participants, complete with extravagant floats, whimsical costumes and creatively choreographed dancing ensembles. From its beginnings as a small parade featuring street artists, the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Celebration is now the premier Santa Barbara County arts event, drawing crowds of over 100,000 spectators from around the world.

At high Noon, on a Saturday near the longest day of the year, creative floats, fascinating costumes, brilliant masks begin their journey from Cota Street up State Street to Micheltorena, transforming downtown Santa Barbara into a vibrant splash of color, music and dance. People-powered floats reignite the creative spirit of Santa Barbara. Commercial elements, such as written words, advertisements, live animals, or motorized vehicles (except wheelchairs) are excluded from the Parade, as is nudity.

The parade begins to arrive in Alameda Park a little past 1 PM, with final entry usually appearing after 2 PM. The Alameda Park Festival continues the celebration with live music by local and international artists; delicious foods and beverages from local restaurants, caterers and non-profit groups; an arts and crafts boutique with more than 75 artisans and craftsmen; a large “drum circle” formed by parade participants and anyone who cares to join in the beat. The wonderful floats from the parade are on display. A special children’s area featured a stage with storytellers, musicians, drama, and mimes.

The floats, costumes and masks in the parade are made by community members at the Solstice Workshop. Anyone can participate in the creation of the floats, masks and costumes by coming to the Workshop, where our paid staff of artisans, technical staff, costumers and mask makers help to make your creative ideas come alive. Solstice Workshop participants have use of a variety of materials as well as the collective, creative spirit of working together in this magical place.

For owners Paul & Kathy Shields, The Savoy Café & Deli in Santa Barbara is more than a classic Santa Barbara eatery, it is a labor of love. Centrally located in downtown Santa Barbara and offering organic and all natural selections, The Savoy Café & Deli is a heartwarming comeback story. Originally opened in 2003 by a couple of Santa Barbara natives, the restaurant was an instant locals favorite and always crowded, voted best new restaurant and best salad bar multiple times.

Owner and Executive Chef, Paul Shields has spent his professional career preparing to bring his exceptional offerings of fresh, natural and organic creations to a diversity of patrons. Paul spent over 10 years in Hawaii working as the executive chef at The Maui Marriot and Kaanapali Beach hotel. He returned to Santa Barbara and worked briefly as a sous chef at the Ojai Valley Inn, before moving to Sunriver, Oregon where he was chef at the Sunriver resort for a year. Upon returning to Santa Barbara again, he served as food and Beverage director at San Ysidro Ranch. Paul then took the director of prepared foods position at the New Organic Lazy Acres Market where he spent 10 years prior to opening The Savoy Café & Deli with his wife, Kathy.

The Shields fell victim to the economic crash in the late 2000’s, and lost their beloved Savoy Café & Deli only to become the owners again in 2010. When talking about reacquiring The Savoy Café & Deli back from the new owners, Kathy said “They were more than generous to us and really wanted us to have our Savoy back. Its more like a miracle and simple, but hard to put into words. Almost as if God said ‘HERE’ on a silver platter, Its like we’ve never left.” Kathy continued, “We have a strong faith, loving families and wonderfully supported church family and friends. We feel more than Blessed, and ever so grateful!”

Having grown up in Santa Barbara, both Paul and Kathy are thrilled to not only raise their 4 boys here, but to be involved with and give back to the community. So, when they got the call from The Food Network in August to be visited by Guy Feiri from “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”(or DDD to fans), the Shields were excited. “People write into The Food Network suggesting where Guy should go. We closed down for filming mid October and it will premier March 5th 2012. Guy cooked Turkey fitters with Paul, sampled pesto green beans and mango quinoa salad. He has never eaten dessert on his show, but he ate my carrot cake!” reported Kathy. “He is very playful with the kids and brought his son, Hunter who got along well with my boys. We aren’t his usual type of place for which he was surprised, until after our interview! He said our story is almost as good as our food! He is very conscious about every detail of the restaurant and looks quietly at everything and asks a few questions as he looks around. He’s totally candid and doesn’t cut his takes and is just natural and funny and playful. I could tell he truly cares about helping small businesses and bettering peoples lives.”

“Blessed, Grateful, and humbled by everyones support! — thats us!” said the Shields.
